A Historic Win for Affordable Homeownership in Ulster County

We have exciting news to share! Governor Hochul recently signed the “Fair Assessment” legislation, a game-changing law that will help more Ulster County families achieve the dream of homeownership.
What does this mean? This new law allows our local government to offer an opt in property tax incentive on homes built by housing non profits (like us at Habitat) and sold to working families. By reducing ongoing property tax costs, we can make homeownership more affordable and accessible for the families we serve.

This victory wouldn’t have been possible without the tireless advocacy of Senator Michelle Hinchey and Assemblymember Didi Barrett, who championed this legislation because they understand that housing affordability is critical to the health and vitality of our community.

At Ulster County Habitat, we’ve always believed that everyone deserves a safe, stable place to call home. This legislation brings us one step closer to that vision, and we’re excited to see how it will expand opportunities for families in our community to build strength, stability, and self-reliance through homeownership.
