Designer Spotlight Open House: A Habitat Home, Beautifully Reimagined

Join Ulster County Habitat for Humanity on Tuesday, June 16 for a Designer Spotlight Open House at 149 Doris Street in Port Ewen, featuring designers Michael Van Nort and Shana Luther.

Ulster County Habitat for Humanity will open the doors of its newly completed home at 149 Doris Street in Port Ewen on Tuesday, June 16 from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. for a Designer Spotlight Open House. The public is invited to tour the staged home, meet the designers, and see firsthand how thoughtful design and reclaimed materials can shape a welcoming, livable space for a working family.

There is a quiet kind of magic that happens when a house becomes a home. The right chair pulled up to a shelf with family photos. A piece of art hung at just the right height. A window that catches the late-afternoon light. These are the small decisions that turn four walls into a place where a family can live, grow, and belong.

On Tuesday, June 16, we’re inviting you to step inside that magic.

Ulster County Habitat for Humanity is proud to host a Designer Spotlight Open House at 149 Doris Street in Port Ewen, one of two homes currently under construction in the Town of Esopus. From 12 to 8 p.m., our doors will be open to the public for a free, drop-in tour of this newly completed, three-bedroom, two-bath, 1,300-square-foot energy-efficient home, thoughtfully staged by two of the Hudson Valley’s most talented interior designers.

Meet the Designers

Michael Van Nort of MVN Design and Shana Luther of Shana Luther Interior Design have generously donated their time, vision, and creative energy to this project, working together to stage the home using more than 50 percent donated furnishings sourced directly from the Ulster County Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Kingston.

“Design is best when it serves a purpose,” Michael shared. “It is a privilege to collaborate with Habitat for Humanity, ReStore, and fellow designer Shana Luther to stage their most recently completed home in Port Ewen. I truly believe that good design is for everyone, and my focus will be on sourcing sustainable, cost-effective furnishings from ReStore as well as highlighting the work of local artists to help the incoming family envision their future in the home.”

Shana brings the same heart to her work. “I’ve long admired the work Habitat for Humanity does, and getting to work with them again is something I don’t take lightly. I’ve always believed that good design should be for everyone, and this partnership feels like that belief in action. Working alongside designer Michael Van Nort, I’m so excited to bring real creativity and care to this home, because every family deserves a space that feels beautiful and truly their own.”

A Love Letter to the ReStore

Every donated lamp, every reclaimed end table, every framed print pulled from the shelves of our Kingston ReStore tells a story. On June 16, those stories come together inside a home built by volunteer hands for a working Ulster County family.

The ReStore is more than a thrift shop. It is a sustainability engine, a community gathering place, and a critical revenue source for our mission. Every purchase and every donation directly supports the construction of homes like this one. The Designer Spotlight Open House is a chance to see, in real time, what your ReStore donations can become in the right hands.

Who This Home Is For

The Doris Street home will be purchased by a qualifying family earning between 50 and 70 percent of the area median income in Ulster County. Habitat partner families qualify for affordable mortgages through our local bank partners and contribute partner family hours toward the construction of their home and the homes of others. It is a hand up, not a handout, and it is the foundation of everything we do.

When you walk through the rooms on June 16, you’ll be seeing the future of a family we are honored to partner with.
